Public debt

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM FEB. 1. The State's public debt stands at Rs. 40,191.37 crores as on November 30 according to provisional figures, the Finance Minister, Vakkom Purushothaman, informed the Assembly today. In a written reply to K.P. Satheesh Chandran, he said that the public debt as on April 1, 2001, was Rs. 23,919 crores. This pointed to an increase of Rs. 16,272 crores during the intervening period. The following were the loans availed of with the rate of interest payable: market loans - 5.75 per cent to 13.85 per cent; Central Government loans: 6.25 per cent to 15 per cent; Life Insurance Corporation - 8 per cent to 13 per cent; General Insurance Corporation - 8.5 per cent to 13 per cent; National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development - six per cent to eight per cent; and National Cooperative Development Corporation - 7.75 per cent to 16.75 per cent.

Visisht Seva Medal winner

Maj. Gen. S.N. Rajan of Army Service Corps, Western Command, has been awarded the President's Visisht Seva Medal (VSM). He is a native of Mayyanad in Kollam district. An alumnus of the Sainik School, Satara, he graduated from the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy and was commissioned into the Army in December 1968. He has served at various locations across the country. He has also served as Colonel, Administration, of an Army division in Punjab, and as Brigadier as Deputy Director of Supply and Transport of a strike core.

Poonthanam Day celebrations

GURUVAYUR FEB. 1. Guruvayur Devaswom has decided to conduct literary contests on February 12 and 13 at Melpathur Auditorium in connection with Poonthanam Day celebrations. According to a release here today, the Poonthanam poetry recitation contests and essay competitions on Poonthanam's poems will be conducted for the lower primary, upper primary, high school and college students separately. Prizes for winners would be distributed at the auditorium on Poonthanam Day on March 13, the release said.

Protest against IA decision

KOCHI FEB. 1. Air Corporations Employees' Union, Indian Airlines Limited, Chennai, has protested against the decision to close Indian Airlines (IA) booking offices at Kochi, Kozhikode and Coimbatore on Sundays. Indian Airlines clients had been depending on these offices on Sundays for ticket endorsement, re-routing, enquiries and bookings, said a statement by S. Rajkumar, regional secretary of the union. He demanded that the authorities roll back the decision.

Air Sahara service

Nedumbassery FEB. 1. Air Sahara will start operating daily service to New Delhi from the Cochin International Airport on Thursday. It will be routed via Hyderabad. Flight S2 146 will leave Nedumbassery at 3.15 p.m. and reach Hyderabad at 4.35 p.m.

The flight, which leaves Hyderabad at 5.15 p.m., will reach New Delhi two hours later.

The fare for the Kochi-Delhi service will be Rs. 14,646; up to Hyderabad, the fare will be Rs. 5,316.

Handicrafts exhibition

KOLLAM Feb. 1. A 12-day exhibition and sales of handicraft and hand printed textile items began at the Jawahar Bal Bhavan here today. The show is being organised by the Gujarat State Handloom, Handicrafts and Industrial Cooperative Federation. At the show there will be live demonstrations on the way some of the items are manufactured. Items on show include saris, churidars, other dress materials and ready made garments, gift items, leather bags, puppets, Rajasthan jewellery and precious stones.

Elected

R. Jayaprakash and K. Aravindakshan Unnithan have been elected president and secretary respectively of the Kottarakara Bar Association. The other office-bearers are N. Sathessh Chandran, vice-president, N. Chandramohan, joint secretary and Bijoy T. Nair, treasurer.

Course

KOZHIKODE Feb.1. Applications have been invited for the 14-day short-term course in book making conducted by the Jan Shikshan Sansthan under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Elementary Education and Literacy, Government of India. Attacked

KASARAGOD FEB. 1. The College Union of LBS College of Engineering here has alleged attacks by local goondas. In a press release issued the union chairman, K. Vivek, alleged that a few of the college students were attacked on their way to the hostel on Monday night. The students were returning from Mangalore after visiting some students who were admitted to Unity Hospital after they were attacked by goondas on January 6. The students have petitioned the college authorities and the police in this regard, the release added.
