MANGALORE, FEB. 1. The Mangalore City Corporation, which is faced with problem of theft of manhole covers in the recent times, is examining a proposal to replace cast iron covers with those made of other material. According to the Executive Engineer of the City Corporation, Suresh Babu, who replied to questions from councillors at the Council meeting on Monday, the engineering division was looking at a couple of material that could be effectively replace the cast iron manhole covers. He said one of the material now available to the MCC was fibre reinforced plastic which was three times tougher than cast iron. He said fibre reinforced plastic manhole covers did not have any local commercial value and hence they would be safe. The panel of engineers at the City Corporation was studying the viability of adopting these covers on an experimental basis. The manhole cover theft in the city had become rampant. This had led to road accidents as motorists and also pedestrians fell into manholes. Just a week ago on Mother Theresa Road (formerly Falnir Road) a family from Valencia commuting on a two-wheeler suffered a fall when their vehicle got stuck in an uncovered manhole. In another incident, a mini van got stuck at Ashok Nagar. According to the BJP councillor, Mariyamma Thomas, the local scrap dealers on Azizuddin Road had put up a stock of stolen manhole covers on sale.
