Haryana
ROHTAK, FEB. 1. The former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, today said the Congress was unable to name its Chief Ministerial candidate in Haryana as ``everyone'' in the State unit was in the race for the post. He said, ``everyone in the State Congress is in the arena for the post of Chief Minister but nobody knows whom Sonia Gandhi will ultimately choose.'' ``[The] Congress is an old and organised party. But why is it not declaring the name of its candidate for chiefministership,'' Mr. Vajpayee asked. He said that the party's ``failure to announce its Chief Ministerial candidate was creating confusion among the people of Haryana.'' ``There were several aspirants for the post in the State Congress resulting in division among them,'' Mr. Vajpayee said adding that ``a divided Congress could not solve the problems of the people of the State.''
Advani's call
Dismissing the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's promise on improvement of the law and order situation in Bihar and Haryana, the BJP president, L.K. Advani, today said the ruling party should first rid the Union Cabinet of Ministers facing criminal charges. ``I read the speech of Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, in newspapers that they will rid Haryana of crime. If you want to make these States free of crime, first make your Cabinet free of criminals,'' he said, addressing an election meeting in Badshahpur in support of the BJP candidate, Kartar Singh Bhadana, contesting from the Sohna constituency. ``Yesterday, I was in Bihar. People of that State are very angry with the Government there, as several schoolchildren have been abducted there in the last few days. In such a situation, you say that we will free Haryana of crime,'' Mr. Advani said. PTI
