CHENNAI, FEB. 1. Murugan, a sub-inspector (crime) attached to the Anna Square police station, Singaravelan, a head constable dismissed from service, and Thiruvasagam, a police informerweresentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment today. The three were arrested in July last for assaulting a couple on the Marina and robbing them of Rs. 1,500. The victims, Rafi and Dilshad, had come to the beach along with a friend, Vasanthi, and were sitting behind the MGR Square when the accused assaulted them and took the money from Ms. Dilshad's handbag. The Seerani Arangam police registered a case against the culprits for voluntarily causing hurt and committing robbery. During the trial, nine prosecution witnesses turned hostile. The XIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Ramanathan, passed the sentence based on the deposition by inspector Ramesh and evidence presented in court. The accused were sentenced to a three-year jail term besides a fine of Rs. 1,000 each. In the event of default, they will undergo RI for another five months. The judgment, however, was suspended till March 1 to enable the three to appeal against the order, the Additional Public Prosecutor, Padmanabhan, said.
