Rain proves a mixed blessing

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR, FEB. 1. Guntur district received good amount of rainfall bringing relief to some paddy farmers, but proving a bane for chilly farmers.

According to an official report, the district received 193.8 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday. The average rainfall in the 57 mandals of the district was 3.5 mm. While Atchempet mandal received the highest of 38.6 mm, 40 per cent of the mandals did not receive any rain.

Durgi, Veldurthi, Dachepalli, Tadikonda, Bellamkonda and Macherla received more than district average rainfall and in some places the chilly crop was damaged to some extent, according to farmers in those areas.

Though this did not have much impact on the cotton crop in majority of the locations as even the third picking was completed, in some low-lying areas cotton fields were partially affected.

Agriculture officials were ascertaining the impact of the rain.

The officials, however, opined that not much of damage would be done to crops due to the rain.
