Youth sprays acid on girl in Salem

SALEM, FEB. 1 . A teenaged girl sustained serious burns all over the body when a youth threw acid on her in a crowded area near the old bus stand here this morning. A youth standing nearby also sustained injuries.

The police said Bhuvaneshwari, a Plus-II student in the Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Fort here, was attacked when she was talking to Rameshkumar (26).

According to eyewitnesses, the youth in his early twenties rushed towards them, sprayed acid at Bhuvaneshwari and ran away.

Both Bhuvaneshwari and Rameshkumar fell on the ground. Members of the public rushed them in an autorickshaw to the Government Medical College Hospital.

The police said the identity of the assailant was established as Selvam, an auto driver, a close relative of the girl. The reason for the attack was not known.
