Temperature

TIRUCHI, FEB. 1. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 31.0 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24.0 degree Celsius.

Body found

The decomposed body of an 80-year-old man was found at the base of the Kurinji hills at Nagalapuram in the district yesterday. The identity of the deceased and the cause of the death are not known. Based on a complaint lodged by the Forest Officer, Thuraiyur Range, the Thuraiyur police have registered a case.

Man arrested

The city police have arrested a man for allegedly preparing duplicate ration cards and school certificates. Saravana Selvan of Rockfort area allegedly prepared fake ration cards and school certificates and cheated the public by issuing them. The Fort Crime police have registered a case.

Loans given

Urban cooperative banks in the city would advance loans to families of rehabilitated child labourers to ensure the economic advancement of the families and to prevent the children from falling back to their old ways, the Deputy Registrar, C. Ravichandran, said.

Disbursing loans to nine families of child labourers, he disclosed that the Cooperative Department was considering the feasibility of setting up a separate cooperative society for providing credit, raw materials and vocational training for families of child labourers. The project officer of the Child Labour Elimination and Effective Rehabilitation Society, Jaisee Suvetha, participated.

Forum plea

The South India Consumer Protection Council has appealed to the Centre to withdraw the hike in the deposit amount for liquefied petroleum gas connections. The executive committee meeting of the council held here recently with M. Muthusamy, Director, adopted the resolution and resolved to organise an agitation if their demand was not conceded at the earliest.

The council appealed to the Government to prevent the sale of medicines, especially sedatives, across the counter at medical shops without prescriptions from a medical practitioner.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 55.27 feet today. The inflow was 150 cusecs and the discharge was nil.
