COIMBATORE, FEB. 1. A large number of shops and commercial establishments downed the shutters here today in protest against the imposition of Service Tax on consignor/consignee. According to a release from the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Coimbatore, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) called for a nationwide bandh today. According to the release, the ICCI fully endorsed the views of CAIT and said that the tax would affect trade and industry. The Chamber treasurer, C. Balasubramanium, said that the members of all the associations affiliated to the Chamber observed the bandh and most of them were traders. He said that the levy of service tax affected trade and industry and it should not be imposed on the consignor or consignee. A release from the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association said, "the onus of collection of Service Tax should be with the service provider." The members of the Coimbatore Motor Part Dealers' Association also participated in the strike, according to its secretary, S. Amarjit Singh.
