`Pattabhisheka' of mutt seer

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 The 13th `pattabhisheka' of Sri Beerendra Keshav Tarakanandpuri Swami will be conducted at a function organised under the leadership of the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and H. Vishwanath, who are considered influential leaders of the Kuruba community. Announcing this here today, the Karnataka Pradesh Kurubara Sangh president, Laxmanrao Chingle, said the heads of five other mutts of the community, and those belonging to other communities have been invited for the two-day celebrations starting on February 9. The Sangh's Belgaum district president, H.S. Naslapur, was present. During the celebrations, for the first time a mass marriage will be organised.

Title for R.N. Srilatha

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 Noted classical singer and trustee of Bhakti Bharati Prathistana, Vidyabhushana, on Tuesday said that well-known classical singer R.N. Srilatha from Mysore will be conferred the title "Sangeeta Saraswati" during the Haridasa Trinity Music Festival to be held at the MGM College here from February 11 to 13. Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Vidyabhushana said that Ms. Srilatha would be conferred the title during the valedictory on February 13. The Principal of MGM College, Malpe Lakshminarayana Samaga, and the Director of Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Research Centre, Heranje Krishna Bhat, were present.

Boy killed in roof collapse

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 A boy was killed and his parents and brother suffered injuries when the roof of their house in Prabhuvanahalli in Gubbi Taluk of the district collapsed due to rains in the early hours of Tuesday. Nanjappa, his wife, Manjula, and Siddesh (8) and Sanjay (4), were asleep when a wall of the house yielded to the rain and the roof collapsed. Siddesh died on the spot. Nanjappa, Manjula and Sanjay, who were admitted to hospital, were discharged in the evening. S.R. Srinivas, Gubbi MLA, P. Muniswamy, Suprintendent of Police, and G.S. Nayak, Assistant Commissioner (Revenue), visited the spot.

Tusker takes up forest policing

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 An elephant donned the role of forest officials to protect the forest resources and chased away a group, which was illegally cutting trees on Government land at Ankanalli near Shanivarsanthe. According to forest officials, Somappa (60) and seven others were illegally cutting trees on January 30 when the elephant started chasing them. Somappa, who was unable to run, fell down and was injured. The others fled the spot. The officials rushed to the spot and admitted him to hospital. — UNI

New Bangalore-Bidar service

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation will introduce a Volvo-made "Airavata" bus between Bidar and Bangalore from February 2. The airconditioned bus will leave Bidar at 5 p.m. and reach Bangalore at 7.45 a.m. the next day, bypassing Hyderabad. On its return journey, it will leave Bangalore at 5.30 p.m., stop at Hyderabad and reach Bidar at 7.45 a.m. the next day. The bus will stop at Zaheerabad, Gooty, Kurnool and Anantapur. The fare is Rs. 600 for adults and Rs. 450 for children. Return journey tickets can also be booked in advance. The Bidar bus stand manager can be contacted on ph. 08482-228508. The semi-sleeper bus operating till now stands withdrawn, according to a press release.

Assurance to teachers

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 The Director of Collegiate Education, K.V. Kodandaramaiah, has assured a delegation from the Mysore University Private College Teachers' Association that the release of salary grant will be made by the 20th of every month from the head office. The assurance came following a meeting with the association delegation comprising its president, K.P. Vasudevan, the secretary, Rangaswamy, and the treasurer, K.P. Paramashivaiah. According to a press release, the delegation highlighted the problems arising out of the delay in salary disbursement.

Several areas inundated

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 Low lying areas of Ashoka Road, Jaycee Road, Old Bus Stand, Vinayaka Vegetable Market and KSRTC bus stand were inundated after the rain in Tumkur. Storm water drains were blocked by solid waste disposed into them. In several slums, water rushed into the huts. Farmers in villages were the most worried lot as this is the time for harvesting of certain crops in the region.

ABVP threatens stir

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat has threatened to launch a district-wide agitation if the State Government does not take steps to improve the condition of the Government Pre-University College in Bidar. In a memorandum to the Government, the ABVP district secretary, Shivakumar Chimkod, said that the college is housed in a dilapidated building. Most of the 22 rooms of the college are about to collapse, he said. The college does not have a full-time principal and more than half of the teachers' posts are vacant, he said in the memorandum.

Man killed in accident

BELGAUMUDUPITUMKURMADIKERIBIDARMYSORETUM, FEB. 1.FEB. 1.FEB. 1 One person died and another was injured when the motorcycle they were riding hit a bullock cart on the Bangalore-Honnavar National Highway, near here, on Monday night. Police said Basavaraj (45) of Chowkikere succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Siddalingaiah (45) of Karethimmanahalli, who was riding pillion, was injured and is admitted to hospital here. He is said to be recovering.
