Sewage plants planned at Akkulam, Valiathura

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 1. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, informed the Assembly today that the Government was planning to set up two major sewage treatment plants at Akkulam and Valiathura to service the capital city and the neighbouring panchayats.

In a written reply to Thiruvananthapuram North MLA, K. Mohankumar, he said the project would be taken up under the Capital Region Development Programme. He said the plant at Valiathura would have a capacity of 117 million litres a day while the one at Aakulam would be equipped to treat 117 million litres a day.

SPV for bus terminal

Mr. Chandy said the Government would constitute a company as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to construct a new terminal for long-distance buses at Eenchakal and reconstruct the existing bus stand at Thampanoor to accommodate city buses.

Moves were on to establish a walk-in aviary in the State capital and technical bids for the project were being examined.

Preliminary studies had been completed on setting up a heritage village at Veli and a tourist resort on the Edayar Island. The Government had taken up a project to augment basic facilities like water supply, transport and wastewater treatment at the Kovalam beach resort. The survey for the project has been entrusted to a private company.

Canal to be cleaned up

Mr. Chandy said the State Government had submitted a Rs.25 crores project to the Environment Ministry to dredge and clean up the Aakulam Lake and Parvathy Puthanar canal.

The Government has accorded administrative sanction for a Rs.245-lakh flood control project on the Karamana and Killi rivers and the Ulloor canal. Another Rs.22.58-lakh scheme to control flooding at Thampanoor and Pazhavangady has also been cleared.
