A clear day ahead

NEW DELHI FEB. 1. A misty morning but a clear sky during the day is the weather department's forecast for the city on Wednesday. The minimum temperature is likely to be around 6 degree Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung on Tuesday were 19.2 and 7.5 degree Celsius, while Palam recorded 19 and 6.3 degree Celsius respectively. while the maximum humidity recorded at Safdarjung and Palam was 86 and 94 per cent, the minimum was 36 and 43 per cent respectively.

Cable thieves

on rampage

NEW DELHI FEB. 1. Cable thieves are giving sleepless nights to the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) authorities these days. During the past couple of days, thieves struck at several places and decamped with underground cables, leaving over 1,000 phones "dead".

On Sunday night, a 210-metre-long cable of 800 pair was stolen from the Arjun Park area, affecting over 500 subscribers living in Arjun Park, Ranaji Enclave and Nagali Dairy areas. Restoration work has been started and might take another two days before normal service is restored.

Similarly, a cable of 1,200 pair of 350 metres was stolen from near the Mandawli police station affecting over 600 subscribers in Mayur Vihar Phase II. Restoration work has been started "on a war footing" and normal service is likely to be restored by February 4.

Workshop on bhagidari

NEW DELHI FEB.1. The Political Science Department of Miranda House at Delhi University is hosting a two-day workshop on "State and citizens' bhagidari in development: Quest for participatory rights" this Wednesday and Thursday (February 2 and 3).

The show will be inaugurated by the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, in the New Seminar Hall at 10-30 a.m. on Wednesday. According to the teacher in charge of the workshop, Dr. Jayashree Pillai, the highlights of the workshop will be a wide-ranging panel discussion on Wednesday and an extempore debate followed by a film show on Thursday.

Suicide bid

NEW DELHI FEB. 1. A 37-year-old doctor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), M. Srinivas, allegedly tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrist in his hostel room today. He was discovered by some hostel residents and rushed to the hospital where his condition is said to be stable. A case of attempt to suicide has been registered by the Police.

Boy rescued

NEW DELHI. FEB. 1. A 11-year old kidnapped boy was rescued by the Anand Vihar Police today. His abductors, however, managed to flee. Sanjeev alias Sanju, a resident of Anand Vihar was reported missing from at around 11 a.m. A ransom call was received by his parents in the afternoon, asking for Rs. 1 lakh to be delivered in the Ballabgarh area of Gurgaon. A police team followed the father and managed to rescue the child.
