NEW DELHI, FEB. 1. A huge contraband of animal skins, including those of tigers and leopards, was seized by the Central Delhi police following the arrest of four persons this Monday. The consignment is valued at about Rs. 5 crores in the international market. Acting on a tip-off that the smugglers of wildlife products were active in the area, the Special Staff of the Central Delhi police developed the inputs, which led to the arrest of Sudesh Kumar from near Ramlila Ground in Kamla Market. A leopard skin was recovered from his possession. During interrogation, Sudesh disclosed that he worked for one of the most notorious poachers in the country, Sansar Chand. At his instance, the police arrested Sansar's niece named Ritu and recovered 10 leopard skins from her house. Further, the police arrested Babu and Badal, agents of Sansar Chand, from a West Patel Nagar house and seized 28 leopard skins, 42 otter skins, two tiger skins, 14 teeth of tiger and leopard, over 135 kg of porcupine thorns, 60 kg of tiger and leopard paws, 3 kg of tiger and leopard claws, 10 pairs of jaws and around 40 bones of these animals. The accused disclosed that they used to purchase the wildlife items from Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Indo-Nepal border. At Sansar's direction, they disposed of these products to buyers from India and abroad. The police said Sansar, a registered bad character of Sadar Bazar police station, has been declared an absconder by the Jaipur police in a case in which his son and his wife, Rani, are in judicial custody. In his absence, Sansar's niece, Ritu, his brother, Narain, nephew, Pritam, and his agent, Sudesh, take care of the business. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi), M.M. Oberoi, said Sansar was involved in at least 13 cases. Last time he was arrested, but he vanished from the scene after coming out on parole. Taking note of his activities, a Rajasthan court had termed Sansar as notorious as the slain sandalwood smuggler Veerappan.
