Federal question

Sir, — This refers to the editorial, "Anti-federal and breach of faith" (Feb. 1). The Rajamannar Committee appointed by the DMK Government in Tamil Nadu to suggest suitable amendments to the Constitution to secure for the States the utmost level of autonomy said in its report: "the national and state governments exist on a basis of equality and neither has the power to make inroads in[to] the definite authority and functions of the other unilaterally."

M. Somasekhar Prasad
Badvel, A.P.

T. Pandian,
Panruti, T.N.

Sir, — The authorities should remember the victims of the tsunami do not care about constitutional niceties.

R. Sundaram,
Chennai

Sir, — Contrary to what many of us claim, the Indian Constitution is federal only in name but unitary in spirit. The framers of the Constitution introduced a number of features that reinforce the unitary bias. That is the ground reality.

V. Raja,

Bangalore
