Child labourers: police told to take action

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, FEB. 2. The Judicial First Class Magistrate 3 of Thrissur, K.P. Sunil, has directed the police to take case against the person who allegedly brought children from Salem in Tamil Nadu and `sold' them here to be engaged as child labourers.

The magistrate issued this direction to the Ollur police following the filing of a public interest litigation by the secretary of the Niyamasahaya Vedi, Joseph Thaikkoodan, based on media reports in this regard.

According to the complainant, the media had reported that a group of people led by one Nedunchezhian of Salem had brought children in the age group of nine to 14, including girls, in a car and publicly sold them at Ollur.

The complainant alleged that the children were now under illegal detention at various houses, where they were being employed as domestic servants.
