KOCHI, FEB. 2. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) today launched its broadband service enabling high-speed Internet connection here. Addressing presspersons at a demonstration of the service, S.A. Thomas, Chief General Manager, BSNL Kerala circle, said there was already a waiting list of 5,000 applications for the service. Of them, 900 were from Ernakulam.
Available exchanges
The service will be initially available from the exchanges at Palarivattom, Ernakulam Boat Jetty, Vennala, Gandhi Nagar and Thrikkakara. By March, it will be extended to 25 more exchanges in the Ernakulam Secondary Switching Area, which includes Idukki district and Lakshadweep. The service will be available in the entire State by December. BSNL plans to have 127 exchange sites for this service in the first phase with a capacity of providing 22,000 connections. The target is to achieve 1,500 connections up to March and 45,000 by December. In Ernakulam, 14,602 is the target. S.R. Pillai, Principal General Manager, BSNL, Ernakulam, and other officials were present at the demonstration.
Packages
The service will be available for home and corporate uses in various packages. A person can get the service for Rs. 500 a month or by an annual payment of Rs. 5,000. The bandwidth will be 256 kilobytes a second. The download limit is a gigabyte. Higher plan packages provide higher bandwidths and download limits.
No additional charge
There is also an offer of no additional usage charges up to June 30 for all home and business plan subscribers who join before March 31. The initial installation charge will include the price of modem as one-time cost or a rental on the modem with security deposit. Dial 1600-424-1600 for more information. With a broadband service, an individual will be able to use the phone while surfing the Net. Video on demand and downloading music, movies, games and other content will also be made available.
