Bihar
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, FEB. 2. The Bharatiya Janata Party today alleged that the release of two kidnapped schoolchildren in Bihar a day before polling began for the Assembly elections was a proof of the "deep nexus" between the "kidnapping industry" and the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal. The BJP vice-president, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, said the RJD president, Lalu Prasad, had been repeatedly saying that the kidnapped children would be rescued before polling, and that was exactly what had happened. The media's focus on the kidnapping had made those involved uncomfortable and they could have decided to release the children. Mr. Naqvi said that while Mr. Prasad claimed credit for the release of the boy in Bhagalpur, Deepak Kumar, the victim himself said that the police did not secure his release and that he managed to escape.
Mr. Naqvi also agreed that the RJD might not have been involved as the kidnappings had affected its election campaign. "It is an ongoing industry here and the kidnappings during the election time were part of the continuing process."
