NEW DELHI, FEB. 2. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today briefed his predecessor, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and the Leader of Opposition, L.K. Advani, on the recent developments in Nepal as part of the exercise to discuss the issue with leaders of major political parties to keep them informed of the situation there. The two Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were with Dr. Singh for 30 minutes. The External Affairs Minister, Natwar Singh, was also present. It is understood that the Prime Minister shared with them the Government's perception of the situation and its possible implications for India. The BJP leaders have themselves reacted to the developments in a manner similar to the official Indian stand. A statement issued by the BJP vice-president, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, said: "The events in Nepal have seriously affected the legitimate cause of democracy. India has been consistently supporting the development of a political system that truly reflects people's aspirations." The party went a step further than the Government when it said: "The King's draconian actions have caused a serious setback to this process [of democracy]. The BJP urges the Government of India to call for the release of political leaders in Nepal."
