PANAJI, FEB. 2. The senior Congressman, Pratap Singh Rane, was sworn in as the 16th Chief Minister of Goa at a ceremony here at midnight. The Independent MLA, Filipe Neri Rodrigues, was sworn in as a Minister. The Governor, S.C. Jamir, administered the oath of office and secrecy. Senior Congress leaders, including Priyaranjan Das Munshi, were present. While Mr. Rane represents Poriem constituency, Mr. Neri represents Velim. The Congress-led coalition United Legislature Party enjoys the support of 15 Congress MLAs, one MGP MLA, one NCP MLA and one independent MLA in the 36-member House. With this, Mr. Rane is becoming the Chief Minister of Goa for the fourth term after Goa attained statehood. Mr. Neri was a minister in the outgoing Government, and later on switched his loyalty to the Congress-led coalition.
