This Day That Age
Weather experts from eight countries of the Asian region and from international organisations met in New Delhi on February 2 at the first conference of the World Meteorological Organisation's Regional Association for Asia. Mr. Jagjivan Ram, Union Communications Minister, who inaugurated the conference, expressed the view that the scientific and technical work of the meeting would greatly help in forging still closer the bonds between the Asian countries and in strengthening the ties of friendship and goodwill between them. Mr. Raj Bahadur, Union Deputy Minister for Communications, said that the modern world needed an organised service of competent meteorologists more than at any time before in its history. Mr. S. Basu, Director-General of Observatories and the principal Indian delegate to the conference, explained the importance of the role of international co-operation in the application of the science of meteorology to the problems of man. Nearly 40 delegates from eight countries and international organisations are attending the conference. The eight countries represented are Burma, Hong Kong, India, Iraq, Japan, Pakistan, Thailand and USSR.
