Erode
By Our Staff Reporter
ERODE, FEB. 3. The Erode Municipality has decided to snap cable connections if operators did not pay the tax arrears of Rs. 80 lakhs before February 8. Municipal officials said a special drive would be conducted on February 8 and 9 in the town. The officials said there were 31,000 connections in Erode and another 4,000 in slum areas. Though the operators were collecting rentals including tax from town area subscribers, the tax part was not being remitted on time. The operators had to pay Rs. 15 per connection as tax to the Municipality, the officials said adding that tax was not being collected from subscribers in the slum areas. They said though reminders were sent to them repeatedly, they failed to respond. The cable operators said there were only 17,800 connections. Though some of them moved a court against the Municipality's decision to cut connections, the court ordered them to remit 50 per cent of the arrears. The officials said the Municipality needed funds to execute the underground drainage scheme and water supply improvement scheme. Only if drastic steps were taken tax arrears could be collected. So far Rs. 7 crores of tax arrears had been collected.
