Rs. 7 crores sought to tackle drinking water crisis

By Our Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE, FEB. 3. More than 320 villages in Davangere district are facing a severe drinking water crisis and many parts of Chennagiri and Jagalur taluks are hard hit. The district administration has submitted a proposal for an additional aid of Rs. 7.47 crores to tackle the problem.

Farmers, who were facing hardship after three years of drought, were happy with the early onset of the monsoon last year. However, there has been no rainfall in any part of the district after October, which has resulted in a shortage of potable water.

The chief executive officer of Davangere Zilla Panchayat, M.N. Narayanaswamy, said that the Government has released Rs. 72 lakhs to tackle the problem. The district administration has taken steps to ensure supply of drinking water to the villages facing severe shortage. Tankers from different departments are being used to supply water to the villages, he added. He said that high fluoride content in drinking water has been reported in 382 villages in the district. The district administration is planning to install de-fluoridation units in these villages to tackle the problem. It has already installed fluoride filter units in five centrally located villages at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs each, he said.

He also said that the Government will provide individuals 90 per cent subsidy on the purchase of fluoride filters that cost Rs. 1,780.
