HASSAN, FEB. 3. The district police have filed charge-sheets against 56 persons in connection with the arson and looting incident at Dyapalapura village and the murder of Girija Shankar, a member of the Hassan City Municipal Council, and his friend Jayaprakash.
Absconding
Disclosing this to presspersons here on Thursday, the Superintendent of Police, H. Panduranga Rane, said that while 39 accused have been arrested, the remaining 17 are absconding and the police are making efforts to arrest them. The accused have not been able to get bail, he said. Around 2,000 people set fire to almost all houses and other property at Dyapalapura village in Salagame hobli of the district on October 12, following the murder of the Congress councillor and his friend.
New village
The mob also attacked neighbouring villages. After running relief camps for those affected for nearly three months, the coalition Government is rebuilding the lives of villagers by developing a new village. Of the 10 accused in connection with the murder, seven have been arrested and three are still at large, he said. Of the 46 accused in arson and looting cases, 32 have been apprehended and 14 are yet to be arrested, he added.
Marginal increase
To a query on the robbery case of April 11, 2004, where a gang of more than six dacoits attacked and killed five people at a petrol station on the bypass on the outskirts of Hassan, Mr. Rane said that the district police are making efforts to trace the culprits. He said that there has been a marginal increase in murder, robbery, theft, and dowry death cases reported in the district. Giving details of the cognisable cases reported during 2004, he said that of the 61 cases of murder that were reported, 55 cases have been detected, as against 53 reported and 45 detected in the previous year. Similarly, of the three dacoity cases, one has been detected, as against the previous year's nine reported and eight detected. There is a slight rise in the number of robbery cases this year. Of the 49 cases reported, 30 have been detected, as against 38 reported and 20 detected in the previous year. Cases reported and detected in 2004 in the district under various heads is as follows (the figures given in the bracket are of 2003): thefts, 646 reported and 300 detected (594 and 224); accidental deaths, 192 and 185 (214 and 202); non fatal accidents, 1,113 and 1,100 (931 and 916); rioting cases, 186 and 186 (203 and 196); hurt cases, 1,252 and 1,252 (1,376 and 132); rape, 16 and 16 (16 and 16); dowry deaths, 10 and 10 (5 and 5); arson, 17 and 17 (15 and 11); atrocities against Dalits, 45 and 45 (51 and 51); petty cases under Karnataka Police Act, 3,419 and 3,419 (2,708 and 2,708); Indian Motor Vehicle Act, 16,202 and 16,202 (15,153 and 15,153); Smoking Act, 46 and 46 (9 and 9); matka gambling, 50 and 50 (34 and 34); other gambling, 35 and 35 (26 and 26).
