BELLARY, FEB. 3. Renowned Hindustani and Carnatic vocalists of national and international repute will participate in the 441st aradhane of Sri Purandara Dasa, the poet-saint known as the "father of Carnatic music," to be held at Hampi on February 8. The 400th aradhane of the poet-saint held in 1964 was a memorable event. Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, the Maharaja of Mysore, inaugurated the event at Purandhara Mantapa, situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra, adjacent to the Vijaya Vittala temple, where Sri Purandara Dasa is said to have spent his last days. The celebration of the aradhane at Hampi was at the mercy of the Government as everything depended on the release of funds. Prior to 1999, the Government sanctioned Rs. 10,000 for the aradhane and the Virupaksha Temple Committee extended cooperation. Though Rani Satish, former Minister for Kannada and Culture, enhanced the grants to Rs. 50,000, they were not released on time. A preparatory meeting, under the chairmanship of the Assistant Commissioner, Hospet, was held on Thursday. The meeting decided to organise the function at the precincts of the Virupaksha Temple and also discussed about arrangements. Venkatachalapati, tahasildar; Tambad, Regional Transport Officer; A.V. Navada of Kannada University, Hampi; Revanakar, Assistant Commissioner, Hindu Religious Endowment; H.S. Shivarudrappa, Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture, attended the meeting.
