KOZHIKODE, FEB. 3. Kozhikode city is all set to host the eighth State Higher Secondary School Youth Festival here from February 6 to 9. More than 3,000 students from 25 higher secondary schools in the State will participate in the annual event, which is expected to witness keen contests in stage and non-stage items. As many as six venues are being readied for the competitions. The competitions will be held at the Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, College of Teacher Education, BEM Girls HSS, New Nalanda auditorium, Town Hall, and St. Joseph's Boys HSS. At a press conference here today, the organising committee chairman and Mayor, Thottathil Raveendran, general convener and Higher Secondary joint director, K.K. Mahammood and publicity committee convener, K.B. Ravi Kumar, said all arrangements had been completed for the smooth conduct of the festival. The festival would be inaugurated by the Education Minister, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, at the main venue, Government Model Higher Secondary School, on February 6. A. Sujanapal, MLA, would preside over the function. The keynote address would be delivered by the Mayor, Thottathil Raveendran. The Minister for Culture, A.P. Anil Kumar, would be the chief guest. MLAs Binoy Viswam, V.K.C. Mammad Koya, C. Mammootty, Mathai Chacko, C. Moyinkutty, C.K. Nanu, T.P. Ramakrishnan, U.C. Raman, T.P.M. Sahir, P. Sankaran, A.C. Shanmughadas, among others, would take part in the inaugural programme. The flag would be hoisted earlier in the day by the Higher Secondary Education director and organising committee president James Joseph.
Procession
A colourful procession that will start from the Malabar Christian College to the main venue would be the highlight of the inaugural day of the festival. The City Police Commissioner, H. Venkatesh, would flag off the procession. The Health Minister, K.K. Ramachandran, would inaugurate the valedictory meeting on February 9 and distribute the trophies.
Competitions
Competitions in non-stage items would be held on February 6. Competitions in Bharatanatyam, Carnatic music, Kuchipudi, Oppana, Mohiniyattom, Kolkkali, Daffmuttu, Arabanamuttu and instrumental music will be held on February 7. Mimicry, Thiruvathirakkali, Keralanadanam, Chakkiarkoothu, Kathakali and other contests would be organised on February 8. Competitions in monoact, Parichumuttukali, Poorakkali, Ottanthullal, Aksharaslokam and Kathaprasangam would be held on February 9. The contestants are the first prize holders in the revenue district youth festivals in which students from more than 1,565 higher secondary schools in the State had taken part.
