KUNNAMKULAM (THRISSUR DIST.), FEB.3. A 32-year old man died of cholera at Kunnamkulam today. The District health authorities gave his name as Shaji of Nambiath House at Chittanjur. He was working as an autorikshaw driver and was under treatment for the last two weeks. The District Medical Officer (DMO), P.V. Mohanan told The Hindu that in all 61 cholera cases had been reported from Kunnamkulam and its nearby areas from January first week.Water contamination appeared to be the main reason for the spread of disease in the area, Dr. Mohanan said. The district health authorities have taken steps to chlorinate all the water reserves in the panchayats near Kunnamkulam municipality. The municipal authorities have also been advised to take similar steps in the water reserves in the municipal limits, the DMO said. Food inspectors are also conducting surprise inspections in hotels in the area to check whether the water being used there is potable. The DMO said most of the people who are infected have been found to be males, and a large percentage of them have been working in the municipal area, though they hail from the neighbouring panchayats. However, there have been no reports of any major infection among their family members. This meant that those males have been infected from their place of work in the municipal limits. So there will have to be strict vigil to ensure supply of safe water in the municipal limits, Dr. Mohanan said.
