BANGALORE, FEB. 3. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, B. Janardhana Poojary, on Thursday exhorted the Congress workers to sort out all their differences to ensure victory to the candidates supported by the party in the gram panchayat elections in the State. Elections will be held to 5,526 gram panchayats in two phases on February 25 and February 27. Addressing a meeting of the party leaders at the Ambedkar Bhavan here, Mr. Dharam Singh said the Congress would not surrender to any party in the coming local bodies elections and the result of the byelection to the Bidar Lok Sabha had taught a lesson to others, including the Janata Dal (S). He urged the leaders and workers to fight unitedly to ensure the victory of the candidates backed by the party in the gram panchayat elections. Internal differences had led to the party's defeat in the last Legislative Assembly elections, he added. Mr. Poojary said the KPCC had called the meeting to prepare a strategy for the gram panchayat elections. The former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, said the KPCC should chalk out a programme to strengthen the party's traditional vote bank. The former Minister and MLA, D.K. Shivakumar, urged the Chief Minister to put off the elections for another one month to give time for the party workers to prepare.
