Jammu & Kashmir
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR, FEB. 3. The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman, Yaseen Malik, was injured in a clash with the police in south Kashmir's Anantnag district today, while the Democratic Freedom Party chief, Shabir Shah, was arrested along with others. Reports said that both Mr. Malik and Mr. Shah were leading an anti-election procession at Khanabal in Anantnag when the police stopped them. They resisted leading to a virtual scuffle between the two sides, in which Mr. Malik was injured. "He has been admitted to hospital in a serious condition," a JKLF spokesman claimed, while condemning the police action. "We were going on with a peaceful demonstration which police did not allow," he said. The police also arrested Mr. Shah along with a dozen others and lodged them at an unknown destination. Doctors attending on Mr. Malik at the S. K. Institute of Medical Sciences said he was out of danger. Meanwhile, a police spokesman said Mr. Malik and his associates tried to assault the police party led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Harmeet Singh, and used abusive language. As prohibitory orders were in force in the town, no unauthorised procession could be allowed, the spokesman said.
