THANJAVUR, FEB.3 . Teachers and staff of Periyar group of institutions will organise psychological counselling for tsunami victims in Nagapattinam district, according to H. Parveen, Project Officer, Community Polytechnic scheme, Periyar Centenary Polytechnic College at Vallam near here. They will organise counselling sessions for adults who are yet to get out of their shock and unable to come back to normal life. To equip teachers and staff to take up these tasks, they were trained at a workshop being held at Periyar Centenary Polytechnic College from Wednesday. G. B. Jayaprakash Narain, Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, B. Mukhopadhyay, counselling psychologist, NITTTR, K. V. Kaliappan, Professor of Clinical Psychology and former president of Indian Academy of Applied Psychology, conducted the workshop. Different theories and principles of crisis management were discussed and a set of interventional strategies for clinical counselling was identified. At the valedictory of the workshop held today, Mr. Muhopadhyay said that the participants were empowered to use various interventional strategies to manage psychological stress and crisis. G. Mallika, Vice-Principal of the college, spoke.
