Thanjavur Feb.3. The Thanjavur Collector, Veera Shanmugha Moni, inaugurated the jewellery exhibition at Poompuhar showroom here on Wednesday. Handicrafts worth Rs. two lakhs are on display at the exhibition. The articles include diamond chains, precious stones, navarathina chains, Hyederabad pearl ornaments, silver jewellery, bangles, valampuri sangu (conch), rudraksha malas, spadiga idols, etc. Apart from these jewellery, Madurai sungadi sarees, handloom sarees, pochampalli sarees, Haryana carpets, Thanjavur art plates, Nachiyarkoil wick lamps, Swamimalai icons, wood carvings, Moradabad bronze utensils, wood carvings, handicrafts from Jaipur, New Delhi, and Rajasthan are also on display. The Collector said that Poompuhar offered a wide variety of articles for sale as it got these articles from various States besides the ones produced in Tamil Nadu. Poompuhar also gave training to the people and made them artisans without restricting the skill to traditional artisans only. Moreover one can get articles at prices ranging from Rs.30 to Rs.6000 in the exhibition. The exhibition will be kept open for public everyday from 10 a.m.to 8 p.m. except Sundays from Feburary 2 to February 12. According to R. Kalaimani, Regional Manager of Poompuhar, Thanjavur region, Poompuhar had 18 branches in Tamil Nadu. Besides, production centres were functioning at Nachiyarkoil, Swamimalai, Thanjavur, Madurai, Vahaikulam, Kallakurichi and Mahabalipuram. Poompuhar also exported its products to countries such as America, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and England. It offers 10 per cent concession for products sold at the exhibition.
