Youngsters' chance to make it big

KOLKATA, FEB. 3. The ensuing N.K.P. Salve Challenger Trophy will see a few youngsters being tried for the big league as the three squads for the meet announced by the BCCI senior selection committee here on Thursday seem to suggest.

The matches will be played in Mumbai between February 7 and 10 and will held under lights.

The India Senior team led by Sourav Ganguly sees a clutch of young players who have made it through the ranks. Of the five youngsters four are batsmen — S. Raina (Uttar Pradesh), Venugopala Rao (Andhra), Neeraj Patel (Gujarat), Shikhar Dhawan — while Gagandeep Singh of Punjab is the bowler.

There are other names like the under-19 India campaigners, skipper Ambati Rayudu and Robin Uthappa who have found place in the `B' and `A' teams Irfan Pathan's brother Yusuf is also in the `A' squad.

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar will be missing out owing to injury, while off-spinner Harbhajan Singh will be in Melbourne, meeting bio-mechanics experts during the period, the BCCI joint secretary, Goutam Dasgupta, said.

The squads:

India Seniors: Sourav Ganguly (capt), M.S. Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, S. Raina, Venugopala Rao, Neeraj Patel, Anil Kumble, Irfan Pathan, L. Balaji, Gagandeep Singh, Rajesh Pawar and Shikhar Dhawan.

India A: Rahul Dravid (capt), Dinesh Kaarthick, Satyajit Parab, Dhiraj Yadav, Mohammad Kaif, Dinesh Mongia, Murali Kartik, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, R.P. Singh, Yusuf Pathan and Robin Uthappa.

India B: Virender Sehwag (capt), Parthiv Patel, Gautam Gambhir, V.V.S. Laxman, S. Sriram, Rohan Gavaskar, Ramesh Powar, Joginder Sharma, Ashish Nehra, S.S. Paul, Amit Bhandari and Ambati Rayudu.
