Top priority for land distribution: Minister

KURNOOL, FEB. 3. The Minister for Lift Irrigation, M. Mareppa, reviewed the progress of various departments in Kurnool district on Thursday. The Collector, Vikas Raj, the Joint Collector, Ramsankar Naik, the MLAs and others attended the meeting.

The Minister told the officers that the Government was giving priority to distribution of land and land development schemes. He said endowments lands were still under the control of landlords. The officers told the Minister that 5,660 acres was distributed among 3,019 families. Of it, 900 acres was fresh land while the remaining land was under the occupation of eligible families.

Under the DWMA programmes, the Minister asked the officers to give priority to unemployed youth. The meeting discussed the implications of migration of labourers from the district. The Collector said the Employment Assurance Programme was being implemented in 849 villages and each family was assured of 50 kg of rice and Rs. 100.

The meeting reviewed the drinking water problem in urban areas in summer. The Minister asked the officials to take steps for keeping pigs away from human habitations and said he would convince the pig rearers to shift the animals in case, they were identified.

The waste from hotels and hostels would be transported to piggeries if they were located outside city.
