Specialised commerce education varsity coming up

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, FEB.3. A new university specialising in commerce education is to be set up by the Institute of Chartered Accounts of India (ICAI) and the Accounting Research Foundation (ARF) near here. Coming up at Dehmi Kalan on the Ajmer-Jaipur highway at an estimated cost of Rs.70 crores, it is expected to start functioning from next July.

Claimed to be the first of its kind in the country, the University, coming up under the provisions of the Rajasthan Self-Financed Universities Ordinance, 2004, has been allocated 107 acres of land by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) at a rebate. The "bhoomi poojan'' ceremony of the new institution, named ICAI University, was carried out today in the presence of the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje.

According to the president of ICAI and Chairman of RAF, Sunil Goyal, Rajasthan was chosen as the place to locate the new university by the 1.25 lakh members strong ICAI as the State had a tradition of learning in commerce. The helpful attitude of the State Government also was a reason for locating it near here, he added.

Besides helping ICAI with enabling services to the students of chartered accountancy the new varsity would provide vocational and professional education in areas of commerce, accounting, finance, economics, corporate governance management, information technology and allied sciences, Mr.Goyal said.

The University proposes to introduce structured curricula of the undergraduate course like B.Com and would try to bring about a qualitative change in commerce education linked with the C.A course. It would offer postgraduate courses in accountancy, auditing, and management.

"With the CA and MBA becoming a desired combination in terms of employment, we would provide specialized courses in management with emphasis on treasury, finance, insurance,'' Mr.Goyal said. Capacity-building in accounting and finance would be taken up regularly by the new University besides imparting training to those who are not members of ICAI, he said.

ICAI, set up back in 1949, now has 2.5 lakh students enrolled with it for the CA course and on an average 8,000 students pass out every year. Said to be the world's third largest accounting body, ICAI has five regional offices, 100 branches and 13 chapters abroad. ARF is a company promoted by ICAI with the objective of promoting research in accountancy and allied areas.
