Pilot completes 100th flight

Bangalore Feb. 3. He has done something very few pilots have done. Group Captain R.K.S. Bhandauria, test pilot at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) here, completed his 100th sortie on the Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas, on Thursday. The aircraft, Tejas OV1, was on its 79th flight. He has become the second test-pilot to achieve this feat after Squadron Leader Suneet Krishna, and all systems of the aircraft are performing well, the ADA said. Three Tejas aircraft have been flying for expansion of the "flight test envelope" to an altitude of 15 km, Mach 1.4 speeds and angle of attack of 20 degrees with +4.5 G to -1 G forces, the ADA said. Work on weapons systems and multi-mode radar integration has started. So far, eight test pilots of the Indian Air Force have evaluated these aircraft, including Air Commodore R.K. Sharma, Project Director of the ADA. The handling qualities and performance of Tejas have been adjudged superb by these pilots. Tejas aircraft have so far completed 187 hours of flight-testing in 340 flight-test sorties on three prototype aircraft. The fourth prototype is undergoing systems integration tests prior to its clearance for flight.

Foundation stone for college

Belgaum Feb. 3. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, is likely to lay the foundation stone for a government medical college here on Sunday. The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah; the Higher Education Minister, D. Manjunath; the Minister for Agricultural Marketing, Prakash B. Hukkeri; and the Minister of State for Textiles, Satish N. Jarkiholi, will be present on the occasion. On Thursday, Mr. Hukkeri, who is also the Belgaum District Minister, held discussions in this regard with police and health authorities here, sources said.

Takes charge at SBM

Bangalore Feb. 3. R. Gopalan (in picture) has taken charge as Chief General Manager of State Bank of Mysore. Earlier, he was Chief General Manager of State Bank of Indore. A postgraduate in science, Mr. Gopalan joined the SBM as a probationary officer in 1970. His earlier assignments include General Manager (Inspection and Finance), State Bank of Indore; General Manager (Planning and Development), State Bank of Travancore; and Assistant General Manager of the Chennai main branch of the SBM.

Administrator appointed

Bangalore Feb. 3. Following the intervention of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), an administrator has been appointed to the Karnataka State Souharda Federal Cooperative Ltd., a banking institution, against which allegations of irregularities and misuse of funds were levelled. B.R. Ravindranath, a former RBI officer, is the administrator, and he has taken charge, according to Anup Deshpande, Managing Director of the cooperative. He said in a statement to the press that efforts are being made to relax the restrictions placed on the bank and protect the interests of depositors. The administrator has been asked to hold an inquiry into the causes for the irregularities noticed in the bank and investigate those responsible for it and submit a report within one week. Mr. Deshpande has assured depositors that there is no cause for concern with regard to the affairs of the cooperative bank.

Water supply schedule

HUBLI FEB. 3. > The following areas in Hubli will get water on Friday from 6 a.m. to midnight: Sadarsofa Main Road, Kolekar Plot, C.I.T.B. Layout, Gousia Town, Tippu Nagar partially, Banatikatti, Sadashivanagar, Maruti Nagar and Nekar Nagar.

Assumes charge

DHARWAD FEB. 3. N.K. Sripathi has taken over as general manager of Malaprabha Grameena Bank, a regional rural bank sponsored by Syndicate Bank covering Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag and Belgaum districts.

He was heading the Tattihalla branch of Syndicate Bank, which covers the Tibetan settlements and is considered as one of the biggest branches, before being posted to Malaprabha Grameena Bank.

Scheme withdrawn

SHIMOGA FEB. 3. A post-paid mobile phone scheme with a monthly rental of Rs. 140 has been withdrawn in Shimoga district with immediate effect by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), according to a press release issued by the General Manager of the Shimoga Telecom District.

However, post-paid schemes with monthly rentals of Rs. 225, Rs. 325 and Rs. 525 are available. For details, customers may contact the Mobile Customer Care Centre, near Telegraph Office, opposite to Kasturba Girls' School.

Seminar on anatomy

Bidar Feb. 3. The Vice-Chancellor of Veterinary University, R.N. Srinivas Gowda, will inaugurate a State-level seminar on "Rachana Shareera" (Anatomy) at the N.K. Jabshetty Ayurvedic Medical College in Bidar on Friday.

Experts in Ayurveda from across the State will participate in the seminar. Shivkumar Swamiji, president of the Sri Chidambar Shikshana Samsthe, which runs the college, will preside, a release said.

Engineers suspended

Raichur Feb. 3. Amlan Aditya Biswas, Chief Executive Officer of the Raichur Zilla Panchayat, has suspended Chandrashekar and Dyamala Naik, junior engineers at the Lingsugur Taluk Panchayat, from service for their alleged involvement in misappropriating funds collected as stamp duty. Mr. Biswas has ordered a departmental inquiry into the allegations.

Woman killed

Raichur Feb. 3. Mumtaz Begum (28), wife of Allabaksh, who was injured seriously when a van hit her when she was walking along the Raichur-Manvi National Highway 23 near Manvi town on Wednesday, died at the Government hospital in Manvi town.

The Manvi Police have registered a case.

Workshop on child labour

DAVANGERE FEB. 3. The Davangere district administration, in association with Campaign Against Child Labour, Karnataka, is organising a one-day workshop on "Prevention of exploitation and selling of children" here on Friday.

The Superintendent of Police, Alok Kumar, will inaugurate the workshop in which over 500 people are expected to participate. The workshop will enlighten people about the laws pertaining to exploitation and trafficking in children apart from chalking out ways to prevent it. M.S. Jayaswamy, The Deputy Director of Women and Child Development and M.V. Venkateshappa, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, will take part in the workshop.
