North sans Sehwag takes on South

VALSAD, FEB. 3. Virender Sehwag will not be seen in action in North Zone's brush with South Zone at the Vallabhai Patel Stadium here on Friday for the Prof. D.B. Deodhar Trophy. The North skipper has withdrawn from the team citing his mother's illness. Sehwag's absence from a crucial match is a blow to the tournament leader.

His departure has thrown the final stage of the competition into a three-way fight. The negative aspect of the bonus point system has already rendered a mixed bag, and now North, without Sehwag, could become a vulnerable customer. Sure enough, V.V.S. Laxman's South would fancy its chances and West would probably go flat out at Jamnagar against Central zone, the only team among four that's not in the race for the title.
