Bibari upsets Deepthi

JAMSHEDPUR, FEB. 3. Little known Assam girl Bibari Basumatary produced the first major upset of the 69the senior National badminton championship eliminating fifth seed C.H. Deepthi of Petroleum 11-1, 11-9 to move into the pre-quarterfinals of the women's singles event here on Thursday.

All the seeded players had a field day. The men's singles and women's singles reached the pre-quarterfinals stage from where the competition could be expected to hot up.

The men's section saw some close matches, especially the fifth seed Utsav Mishra (Uttar Pradesh) came through after a ding-dong battle against T. Tanisak (Andhra Pradesh). After losing the first game at 12-15, Mishra had to stretch every sinew to subdue the fighting AP player to win the next two at 15-10, 15-4. The game lasted for almost 70 minutes.

Current junior National runner-up P. Kashyap (AP) too extended Ravinder Singh (UP). The youngster waged a grim battle in a contest marked by long rallies but lost at 7-15, 15-9, 9-15. Reigning junior National champion Sagar Chopda of Maharashtra ousted 14th seed Mangarish Palekar of Railways in a well-contested two games. Chopda, in making a smooth move into the world of men, triumphed 15-8, 15-6.

Former junior National champion Rohan Castelino of Karnataka got a scare from a fighting Anshuman Hazarika of Assam in a third round action. Hazarika won the first game at 12-15 but failed to sustain the momentum and lost the next two.
