`Drop move to build recharge structure across Coleroon'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, FEB. 3. Farmers of Someshvarapuram in Thanjavur district have urged the Tamil Nadu Government to drop the proposal for the construction of a groundwater recharging structure across the Coleroon in Thanjavur and Perambalur districts.

Instead, the Someshvarapuram Grama Vivasaya Nala Padhukaappu Sangham has suggested building of seven barrages that would allow for storage of 14 tmcft water.

By opening the regulators of the seven barrages, the Veeranam lake level could be kept sufficient for the already existing pumping system.

The existing canal leading to the Veeranam lake could itself be utilised for the purpose.

Also, when the barrages are constructed, roads of sufficient width can be laid, which will add to the extension of roadways interconnecting many villages reducing the travelling distance.

The current proposal of checkdams with a maximum of six metres inside the sand bed was meaningless when the existing water level was below that.
