KOLLAM, FEB. 3. Under the auspices of the Maruthimala Samrakshana Samskarika Samithy, a dharna and fast was held in front of the Pooyapally Police Station in protest against the alleged failure of the police and revenue officials to protect the Maruthi hillock from a granite mafia. The dharna was inaugurated by the District Panchayat President, Aisha Potti. In her address, Ms. Potti said that if the police failed to take action against the mining activities, the protest against the same would be staged in front of the State Secretariat. She called for a total ban on mining activities at Maruthimala. The AIYF State general secretary, V.S. Sunil, called for a Plachimada model agitation to save the hillock. He called for the inclusion of the students in the agitation.
