RANCHI, FEB. 3. The first phase of polling for the Jharkhand Assembly elections in 24 constituencies today was marred by large-scale violence. Around 12.30 a.m., a police party carrying polling materials was blown up in a landmine blast at Chhattarpur area of Palamau district. The victims included a sub-inspector, Ashok Paswan, and an assistant sub-inspector, besides four constables and a private driver. Clashes between police and MCCI activists were reported from many booths in Chatra, Giridih, Manika, Latehar constituencies. In a clash between supporters of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and those of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at Rajdhanwar, one was injured. The State Industry Minister and BJP candidate, Ravindra Rai, is contesting from the seat.
