Pondicherry
By our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, FEB. 3. A three-member team of the All-India Mahila Morcha of the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), headed by its vice president and former Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, Ms. Bhavana Chikhalia, visited the tsunami-affected villages in the Karaikal region on Wednesday and took note of the requirements of the fishermen community. Addressing presspersons here today, Ms. Chikhalia said she, along with the secretary, Rakesh Sharma, and the member of the executive committee of the national council of the BJP, Lalitha Kumaramangalam, visited the villages and found that the relief measures initiated by the Government had not reached most families. The team apprised the Regional Administrator in Karaikal of the people's requirements. Ms. Kumaramangalam said the morcha proposed to construct permanent houses at Mandapathur. She said the site for houses should be made available by the Pondicherry Government.
Kerosene shortage
Women in most villages said that while rice was available under the government relief package, kerosene was in demand, Ms. Kumaramangalam said. She said the morcha planned to construct a house at a cost of Rs. 1.5 lakhs. The proposal would be sent to the high command for follow-up action. Some 120 families would be benefited under this scheme, she said. Ms. Chikhalia said fishermen demanded that fishing vessels and nets be made available without delay to enable them to resume work. Admitting that it was an onerous task for the official machinery to cater for the requirements of those hit by the tsunami, Ms. Kumaramangalam said the Government could speed up rehabilitation and begin counselling villagers, particularly women, who developed psychological problems following the death of theirrelatives to the tsunami.
