Ration rice, kerosene seized
CHENNAI FEB. 3. Rice and kerosene, worth Rs. 25 lakhs, meant for the the public distribution system, were seized in State-wide raids conducted by the Civil Supplies CID in January. The officials recovered 380 tonnes of rice worth Rs. 21.52 lakhs and 12,714 litres of kerosene valued at Rs. 3.35 lakhs. They confiscated 1,171 domestic LPG cylinders utilised in commercial establishments. Twenty-five vehicles involved in transporting the items were seized. They registered 754 criminal cases and arrested 47 persons, according to an official release.
Woman killed in accident
MADURAI FEB. 3 . A woman was killed and 35 others were injured when a van in which they were travelling overturned at Kalligudi near here today. The police said the van was proceeding from Dindigul to Kalligudi when the mishap occurred. Ten passengers, who suffered grievous injuries, were rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, where A. Pandiammal of Dindigul died. The condition of two was said to be critical. The Kalligudi police have registered a case.
Student commits suicide
ERODE FEB. 3 . An engineering student committed suicide at Perundurai last evening. The police said Shan Habeeb, a native of Alleppey, Kerala, and a second-year student of a private college at Nadupatty, left hostel when his roommate complained that Rs. 700 was missing. Shan Habeeb admitted to having taken it and repaid the amount. Since then, he was staying with some other students at Perudnurai. When his roommates returned from the college, they noticed Shan Habeeeb committed suicide by hanging. The Perundurai police have opened an investigation.
Lorry driver robbed
DEVAKOTTAI FEB. 3. A lorry driver was robbed off Rs.11 lakhs at Nagadi near here today. Sources said a group, posing as customs officials, stopped the lorry, going to Kottaipattinam near Pudukottai from Tuticorin, at Sarugani on the Madurai-Thondi road. It belonged to a fish export company at Tuticorin. They asked Krishnakumar (29) to drive the vehicle to Nagadi and took away Rs.11 lakhs, kept in the lorry for being handed over to the company's branch office at Kottaipattinam. The police have formed six teams.
ICF employees' plea
CHENNAI FEB. 3 . Employees of the Integrated Coach Factory, affiliated to the Karmik Sangh, have requested the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, to stop outsourcing of works. In a memorandum, they said 40 per cent of the works were now given to private contractors. This would lead to retrenchment. They also demanded an extra increment and free pass for them to commemorate the factory's silver jubilee.
Telugu short story award
CHENNAI FEB. 3 . Telugu short stories are invited for the R.S. Krishna Moorthy Award for 2005. The stories should be original, not exceeding 20 foolscap pages written only one side and in legible handwriting. They should reach N.S. Murthy, 8-100, Naiduthota Bus Stop, Vepagunta, Visakhapatnam-530047, by March 31. The award carries a certificate and a cash prize of Rs.3,000 for the first prize winner and Rs. 2,000 for the second prize winner. There will also be a student-writer prize of Rs.1,000 this year. A certificate has to be enclosed from the head of the institution. A panel of writers and critics will judge the stories. The award will be presented on June 6, the birth anniversary of the Telugu short story writer and translator.
Tourism fair from February 5
CHENNAI FEB. 3 . The 39th edition of the Travel and Tourism Fair, and Outbound Travel Mart will be held at Rajah Muthiah and Rani Meyyammai Halls here from February 5. The three-day fair will have participants from Thailand, New Zealand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Nepal. As many as 13 States, including the Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Daman, Goa and Lakshadweep, besides Tamil Nadu, are taking part. Nearly 150 stalls will be put up for the travel trade and tour operators to have interaction with domestic and international tour operators and State and Central Government tourism officials. V. Ramadoss, State Information and Tourism Secretary, will inaugurate the fair.
Presidential award
CHENNAI FEB. 3. Ajit Kumar, Commissioner of Customs (Export), Chennai, has been chosen for the Presidential award for specific distinguished record of service. Mr. Kumar's contribution to the development of a citizen friendly portal on matters relating to the central excise and service tax and the launch of e-filing of service tax returns in 2003 the first such web-based facility in the country was some of the achievements.
Train hits tractor
Dharmapuri Feb. 3. The Coimbatore-bound Intercity Express from Bangalore met with a freak accident when it rammed against a tractor cum a tiller on an unmanned level crossing at Modhaholahalli about 20 km from here today. According to the railway police, a farmer who was attempting to cross the track left the tractor on the track on noticing the train approaching and fled the scene. The train rammed against the tractor damaging it severely. The train engine, which suffered damages, was delayed for nearly three hours and later left for Coimbatore. The Dharmapuri Railway Police have registered a case.
Cars impounded for using LPG
Dharmapuri Feb. 3 . Road Transport Office authorities seized five cars fitted with gas cylinders for domestic consumption and unapproved kits on Wednesday during vehicle checks on the Dharmapuri-Salem Road. Action has been initiated against the vehicle owners.
Boil water before use
ERODE FEB. 3. The Kasipalayam Municipality and other local bodies here has said that almost all the third grade Municipalities are pumping the Cauvery River water for drinking. Since the flow of water in the Cauvery River has fallen the public should use the water only after boiling it, the officials said. Health officials too have urged the public to use only boiled water.
