Colachel fishermen get good catch

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL, JAN. 3. Fishermen of Colachel are jubilant that they could get a good catch and sell it for lucrative price for the first time after the December 26, 2004 tsunami.

The fishermen at and around Colachel were used to go for deep-sea fishing. They could not venture into the sea for the last one month, as their mechanized boats were either washed away or damaged.

Thanks to the Government's efforts at helping them repair their boats, the fishermen went for deep-sea fishing 10 days ago. They returned with their catch this morning.

The Colachel shore wore a festive look and fish traders from Kerala were camping in the coastal areas to purchase seasonal shark fish. Each fish weighed 40 to 80 kg that fetched Rs. 115 a kg. The mechanized boats from Kerala are anchored at Colachel.

Wilbert, vice-president, Mechanized Boat Operators Association, said all mechanized boat operators started venturing into the sea. They were getting good catch. As the seasonal fish had very good market in Kerala, fishermen could get an attractive price for their catch.
