Local body polls in September

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 3. The Minister for Local Self-Government, Kutty Ahmed Kutty, has said that elections to the local bodies in the State will be held in September this year.

He made this statement while replying to a discussion in the Assembly on a motion moved for referring the Bills to the Subject Committee of the House.

The Bills were for amending the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act and the Kerala Municipality Act to incorporate a new provision for setting up a `delimitation committee' for redrawing the boundaries of the panchayats and urban bodies.

He said the amendments had become necessary in view of a High Court verdict striking down as unconstitutional the existing provisions giving the powers relating to the delimitation exercise to the State Election Commission.

The Bills were referred to the Subject Committee after the discussion.
