Vishwakarma meet on February 27

MANGALORE, FEB. 3. The Akhila Karnataka Vishwakarma Mahasammelan Samiti, Bangalore, is organising a State-level meet of the Vishwakarma community in Bangalore in April 2005.

As a precursor to the meet, the samiti has organised district-level meetings of the community.

The Dakshina Kannada meeting will be held at Nehru Maidan here on February 27, according to a press release. There are two lakh Vishwakarmas in Dakshina Kannada district.

Recognition

Most of them are living below the poverty line. The nearly 40 lakh members of the community across the State are yet to be recognised politically.

Many Vishwakarmas are taking up jobs, giving up their traditional occupation. The samiti has urged the Government to take steps to stem this trend.

Gurushiva Sujnana Murthy swamiji of Sujnana Prabhu Peeta, Aremadanahalli, Hassan, K.P. Nanjundi, television star, and many elected representatives will participate in the district-level meeting. A procession will be taken from Jyothi Circle to the venue of the function, the release added.
