MANGALORE, FEB. 3. The image of a flooded landscape with a hut surrounded by water with a signboard saying "Plot for sale" captures the seriousness of the loss and devastation afflicted by the tsunami. This is one of the photographs displayed by Dayanand Kukkaje, a photographer with Sanjevani, who visited Tamil Nadu and Port Blair post-tsunami.

The exhibition, which commenced today at Khandaya Bhavan, showcases 102 photographs taken in the affected areas by Mr. Kukkaje. The Deputy Commissioner, Arvind Shrivastav, who inaugurated the exhibition, appreciated the photographs and said: "The photographs speak for themselves; no written or verbal explanation is needed. We realise now that nature is powerful and we need to respect it."

Senior photographer Yajna, who was the chief guest, appreciated the quality of the photographs and encouraged Mr. Kukkaje to cover a wide range of topics in future.

The photographs include one of an overturned truck lying on a marshy land in a village in Tamil Nadu, Red Cross workers sorting out clothes, a broken Marina Park wall along the Marina Beach, and relief supplies lying in a heap on the streets in Chennai.

The photographs from Port Blair include images of the Kalapani prison and a tribal hut belonging to the Jharwas.

Mr. Kukkaje spent three days with the Red Cross in Chennai and nine days at Port Blair to take part in the relief operations.

The Udupi District Congress Seva Dal President, Ashok Kodavur, and the Assistant Commissioner, Prabhakar Sharma, were present.

The exhibition will conclude on Saturday.
