KANCHEEPURAM, FEB. 3. The Kancheepuram judicial magistrate-I, G. Uthamaraj, today extended up to February 10 judicial custody for Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, junior Kanchi Acharya; his brother Raghu, the Kanchi Mutt manager N. Sundaresa Iyer and 13 others, against whom charges have been framed in the Sankararaman murder case. Earlier, he extended up to February 10 remand for accused-turned-approver Ravi Subramaniam. Mr. Raghu went up to the magistrate and said he would like to refute certain reports, which appeared in the print media attributing them to his "statement" and insisted that his submission be recorded. Rejecting the plea, Mr. Uthamaraj said newspaper reports would not be considered by any court. Responding to a query by A. Shanmugam, counsel for the Acharya, the magistrate said the charge sheet filed by the prosecution was taken on file. On the plea why the remand was extended, he directed counsel to apply for a copy of documents. Stalin and Kumar, two other accused, requested that they be allowed to speak to their relatives for a few minutes and that the escort police be directed to provide them lunch. The other accused whose remand was extended are Ravi, Palani, `Mattu' Basker, Sekar, Sundaram, Anandkumar, `Dil' Pandian, Arumugam, Sathish, Arun and Devarajan.
Appu moves for bail
Appu alias Krishnasamy, arrested in the Sankararaman murder case, today moved the sessions court at Chengalpattu for bail. A bail application was moved by his counsel Rajarathinam. The Principal Sessions Judge, G.M. Akbar Ali, posted the application for February 7. The five fake accused, `dil' Pandian, Arumugam, Sathish, Arun and Devarajan, whose bail applications were earlier dismissed by the sessions court, have again moved the court for bail. Another accused, Silver Star alias Stalin, has also moved the court for bail, according to the Chengalpattu public prosecutor, K. Arumugam. The special investigation team arrested 25 persons, including the Kanchai Acharyas, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, in the case. Only three, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, Senthilkumar and Arumugam, were enlarged on bail. The Supreme Court granted conditional bail to Sri Jayendra Saraswathi on January 10. The District Sessions Court, which squashed the bail applications of Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, his brother, Raghu, and the Mutt manager, Sundaresa Iyer, on January 27, ordered the release of Senthilkumar and Arumugam on January 28.
