CHENNAI, FEB. 3. The police arrested four youths, including a polytechnic student, when they attempted to take away an autorickshaw after attacking the driver at Kilpauk on Wednesday. According to the police, around 8.45 p.m. Vijayakumar, Srinivasan, Ganesan and Ramesh of Kondithope approached an autorickshaw driver, Ramalingam, who was waiting on Tana Street, Purasawalkam, and hired the vehicle. While the vehicle was passing through Kilpauk, they allegedly sprayed chilli powder on Ramalingam and pushed him off the vehicle. They then escaped with the vehicle. Ramalingam informed the control room and all patrol vehicles in and around Kilpauk were alerted. One of the patrol vehicles spotted the autorickshaw and stopped it. The police secured the four youths and interrogation revealed that they were involved in similar offences in the past three months. They took away five autorickshaws two in Vepery, one each from Kilpauk, Chetpet and Foreshore Estate after spraying chilli powder on drivers, the police said. Sunil Kumar, Joint Commissioner, Central, said the gang leader, Vijayakumar, was initially involved in small offences and later started stealing autorickshaws. Recently he purchased welding equipment to dismantle stolen vehicles. The gang would remove the parts of an autorickshaw within 20 minutesof stealing it. Soon after dismantling the vehicle, the parts would reach shops selling second-hand spare parts. Three more members of the gang were at large and they would be arrested soon, said Mr. Sunil Kumar.
