Roads here are unmotorable

By Ramesh Susarla

GUNTUR, FEB. 3. The first division of the Guntur Municipal Corporation lags behind in development with barely 50 per cent of the roads black-topped or cement concrete laid. The main road leading to Palakalur from Gujjannagundla Centre is the worst affected with the recent rains spoiling its condition. The 1.2 k.m stretch of the road in the division was in the same condition for the past several years, but none bothered about it. "Hundreds of lorries carrying bricks and stone chips from crushers ply on the main road and majority of them stop at Jhanda Chettu junction leading to a lot of pollution," says Sunita.

Worst hit areas

There are pools of water on the road making it difficult for vehicles to ply on the main road. Majority of the by-lanes have not been formed in the colonies on the fringes. The worst affected are the Sri Krishna Nagar, Krishnababu Colony, and Kalyan Nagar. The only developed colonies with the affluent sections are the JKC Nagar, and SVN Colony, with good roads thanks to the contributions made by the residents under the Janmabhoomi programme at some places. Water gets stagnated in the vacant plots in the division. The best example is the one adjacent to the corporator, Vudutha Krishna Rao's house. The water from the open drains, cattle sheds accumulate there and the same pit is used as garbage dumping yard. Mosquitoes find good number of breeding grounds."Very little is being done to ensure accumulation of water is not there. Occasional fogging does not help," opined Thadiboina Kutumba Rao, residing in Netaji Nagar.

Streetlights lacking

Garbage collection is done from door-to-door in five areas. Water pipelines need to be laid in many extension areas. Number of people had applied for tap connections, under the Rs.1,200 scheme, but were not sure of securing one. Street lighting needs improvement.
