Work on to repair the burst in the Pilloor drinking water pipeline near the city.
COIMBATORE, FEB. 3. Supply of drinking water under the Pilloor scheme was hit due to a burst in the main line this morning. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board said the burst occurred near Kattan Hills and restoration work was underway. It said supply was hit today and would not be made tomorrow also to the Coimbatore Corporation areas, 22 town panchayats and rural habitations served by the scheme. Sources in TWAD Board said a backflow triggered a water hammer pressure and this resulted in the burst. They claimed that this was a fallout of the leakage reported a couple of weeks ago through a pipe meant for overflow of excess water. The pipe was closed instead of measures to end the leakage. "We told higher officials that total closure of the pipe would lead to a burst. Even after the breach is closed, it can recur elsewhere if the block in the drain pipe is not released." Stating that nearly 10 air valves had been closed, they said that the TWAD Board had spent crores on plugging breaches instead of correcting the system. People would be denied water for days when burst occurred frequently. The TWAD, however, said that water supply would be restored by midnight tomorrow.
