Musharraf pins hopes on U.S. aid

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, FEB. 4. The Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf, has expressed the hope that the U.S. "assistance" to the Pakistani armed forces will help maintain military balance in the region. He was talking to a U.S. defence delegation led by the Under-Secretary for Defence, Douglas Feith, in Rawalpindi today. The delegation is here in connection with the Pakistan-U.S. Defence Consultative Group (DCG) to review military cooperation and assistance.

The delegation reviewed defence relations between Pakistan and the U.S. including progress on the U.S. economic and military assistance package worth $3 billions commencing this year.

An official statement said Mr. Feith told Gen. Musharraf that the U.S. was willing to provide more assistance to Pakistan in the socio-economic field as well.

Plea for F-16s

Mr. Feith said on Thursday Pakistan's request for F-16 aircraft was under consideration and would be dealt with at the "right time." He told a joint press conference with Pakistani officials in Rawalpindi that the sale of the military jets "continues to remain under consideration." The leader of Pakistan's delegation, Defence Secretary Hamid Nawaz, was more optimistic saying "there is a lot of hope in the air" about acquiring the jets. Pakistan has indicated that they want to buy 25 F-16s — worth around $25 millions each — by mid-2005 to add another squadron of aircraft to its existing fleet.
