`Shut down government offices in schools'

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 4. The Bharatiya Janata Party councillor and Member of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's Standing Committee, Vijender Gupta, has demanded that all offices being run from municipal primary school buildings be closed immediately so that studies and other activities of children there are not affected.

In this connection, Mr. Gupta has also moved a resolution in the meeting of Rohini zone ward committee that the Rationing Office of Delhi Government being run from the Prashant Vihar municipal primary school be closed immediately because schoolchildren and teachers were facing disturbance due to official activities going on in the school premises. The resolution was passed at the meeting and forwarded to the Education Department for immediate eviction of the office. According to Mr. Gupta, initially a hall of the primary school was taken over the Delhi Government for temporary functioning of the office for making voter identity cards. However, when this work was over, the hall was handed over to the Rationing Department and an office was opened there. Now, a large number of visitors throng the complex during school hours, disturbing study work and other activities.

The BJP councillor further claimed that the misuse of school premises for running Government office amounted to contempt of court as the Delhi High Court has banned any such activity in and around a school that hampers smooth functioning of the school and affects children's studies. He asked the Municipal authorities to act immediately and remove the office from the school.
